Important Deadlines for Special District Regular Elections

January – February 2025

As we prepare for the May 2025 elections, here are the key deadlines and actions for January and February:

  1. Board Adoption of Election Resolution. No later than your February Board meeting, the Board should adopt an Election Resolution appointing a Designated Election Official (DEO) and specifying the type of election (mail ballot or polling place). The Resolution should also grant the DEO authority to cancel the election.
  2. Call for Nominations. The Call for Nominations must be published once in a newspaper of general circulation within the District between January 26, 2025 and February 20, 2025. In addition to publication, the Call for Nominations must also be shared by one of the following methods:
    1. Posting the notice on the official district website;
    2. Include notice as a prominent part of an informational mailing sent to electors;
    3. Mailing the notice to each address with active registered electors; or
    4. For districts with fewer than 1,000 eligible electors in a county with a population under 30,000, posting the notice in three locations within district boundaries and at the clerk and recorder’s office through the day after the Call for Nominations closes.
  3. Self-Nomination Forms. Eligible candidates must file Self-Nomination and Acceptance forms with the DEO by the close of business on February 28, 2025. DEOs must also notify candidates about the sufficiency or insufficiency of their forms by February 28, 2025.  If there will be an election (election is not canceled), the DEO must file the forms with the Secretary of State and the County Clerk and Recorder by March 7, 2025.
  4. Write-In Candidates. March 3, 2025 is the final day to accept the Written Affidavit of Write-In Candidate to the DEO. If there will be an election (election is not canceled), the DEO must file the forms with the Secretary of State and the County Clerk and Recorder by March 7, 2025.

The next update will be on February 28, 2025.  For any questions, please do not hesitate to contact John Chmil, Dillon Sena or Carolyn Smoot.
