Special District Election Update

As we move into the next phase of the May 6, 2025 regular special district election cycle, we are providing another update on next steps.

Cancelled Election.

If the election has been cancelled, the Designated Election Official (DEO) must publish the Notice of Cancellation (“Notice”) and post a copy of the Notice at (i) each polling place, (ii) the office of the DEO, and (iii) in the office of the Clerk and Recorder for each county.  The notice, along with the Resolution authorizing cancellation, must also be filed with the DLG. In addition, the DEO should provide notice to each candidate that the election was cancelled and that they are deemed elected by acclamation.  If the election is cancelled, self-nomination forms do NOT get filed with the Secretary of State.

Please also forward a copy of the Notice to our office. For a cancelled election, oaths are not taken until after election day (May 6, 2025).

If the Election is Held.

By this time, the DEO shall have certified the ballot content, filed self-nomination forms and write-in affidavits with the Secretary of State, and mailed ballots to any UOCAVA voters. Please contact our office for assistance if you have not yet completed these steps.

Within 45 days of the election, the DEO must make available an instruction class for election judges.  The Lyons Gaddis election judge training will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 1:30 pm at the West Metro Fire Protection District located at 433 South Allison Parkway, Lakewood, CO 80226. There is no flat fee to attend the training.  Costs of preparation and the presentation will be pro-rated among total attendees on a per client basis.  If you cannot join us in-person, we will also provide a remote option. Please contact our office if you are interested in attending.

For any questions, please do not hesitate to contact John Chmil (jchmil@lyonsgaddis.com), Dillon Sena (desena@lyonsgaddis.com) or Carolyn Smoot (csmoot@lyonsgaddis.com).
